Melbourne laneways and day trips
Flinders Street is the meeting point. The city is the laneways, the galleries, and the day trips you should not all attempt on one Sunday.

Melbourne is a walking city that pretends to be a driving city. Start at Flinders Street because everyone still does, then lose the river for a while in the laneways. Coffee is not a personality, but it is a useful way to stand still. The galleries — state and smaller — are why people stay longer than they meant to.
Day trips are where visitors come to grief. The Great Ocean Road is not a day trip if you want to keep any kindness toward yourself. The Mornington Peninsula, the Bellarine, the Dandenongs, or a Healesville wildlife visit are better single-day shapes. Phillip Island penguins are a timetable; if you go, go for the animals and leave before you turn it into a parking argument.
Weather is a personality
Four seasons in a day is a cliché because of the wind. Pack a layer. Winter has its own beauty if you like interiors. Summer can be a blast of heat that makes the bay the point. Use when to visit by region if you are chaining Sydney and Melbourne in one fortnight.
Trams are not decorative. Myki and patience will take you farther than a hire car in the inner grid.
Staying
North or south of the river is a tribal question. Stay near a tram you will use. The stay-booking guide applies if Melbourne is one bead on a longer string.
Pick one day trip and one neighbourhood to eat in twice. That is a better Melbourne than five lookouts and a headache.
Questions from the desk
- How many days for the city itself?
- Three if you like art and food. Two if you are only passing through.
- Which day trip if I only have one?
- The Peninsula or the Dandenongs if you want ease. The Ocean Road only if you will stay overnight.

Perth to Margaret River in a long weekend
The west coast does not owe you a three-week loop. A long weekend still works if you pick surf, forest or wine and refuse to do all three at full speed.

A Tasmania loop for first-timers
Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake will try to become the whole trip. Let them be a chapter. The island is a loop, not a single postcard.

Best time to visit Sydney
Late spring still does the work the old site said it did: fewer crowds than high summer, warm enough to swim, cool enough to walk to the next attraction.
